The Sultanah of Malaysia's state of Kedah,
who inaugurated the opening of the Rimba Ilmu Botanic Garden in 1974,
passed away on 26 August 2003

HRH Tuanku Hajjah Bahiyah Almarhum Tuanku Abdul Rahman was installed as the Sultanah of Kedah on 20 February, 1959. The late Sultanah completed her higher education in Social Science at the Nottingham University, U.K., in 1954. She became the Raja Permaisuri Agong (Malaysian Queen) when Sultan Abdul Halim was installed as the fifth Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King) of Malaysia, from 1970 to 1975. She was appointed Chancellor of the University of Malaya from 1972 to 1986 and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Education by the university in 1979. The Sultanah had been involved with various charities and voluntary work and mooted the establishment of the Sultanah Bahiyah Foundation in 1997 which helps the less fortunate.

HRH Tuanku Bahiyah was born in Sri Menanti in Negri Sembilan state and was laid to rest at the Royal Mausoleum in Langgar, near Alor Star in Kedah state.
