In this section we recount, through photographs, a bit of the history and special events of the Rimba Ilmu Botanic Garden in the past.

Her Majesty The Raja Permaisuri Agong (Queen) of Malaysia, then the Sultanah of Kedah and in her capacity as the Chancellor of the University, with Professor W.R. Stanton (then Head of the Botany Department) after the ceremonial planting of Citrus halimii, a species of citrus named after her husband, His Majesty Duli Yang Maha Mulia Seri Paduka Baginda Yang DiPertuan Agong of Malaysia. The official opening of the Rimba Ilmu, on 25 August 1974, was an eventful occasion, including the encumberment of one of the landrovers in the official entourage in the new location being carved out for the Garden.

His Royal Highness, Sultan Azlan Shah, the University's Chancellor, introduced to the work of the Rimba Ilmu by Prof Dato' Dr Ahmad Nawawi (left) and Royal Prof Ungku Aziz (right) during the royal visit of September 1986. On 1 December 1997, the new Rimba Ilmu Building is ready and declared open by Y.B.The Minister of Education then, Dato' Mohd. Najib bin Tun Hj Abdul Razak.

For the first time, all of the key reference collections for plant sciences in the University of Malaya (the main herbarium with pteridophyte and seed-plant holdings, the bryophyte herbarium, and the seaweed reference holdings) are housed within a single facility in the Rimba Ilmu Building.

3 March 2000: The then Vice Chancellor, Tan Sri Dato' Dr Hj Abdullah Sanusi Ahmad (left) officially opened the Conservatory of Rare Plants and Orchids at the same time he inaugurated the new premises for the KLU Herbarium.
